Before The Film – Kingsman: The Secret Service

2015-02-16 19.37.45
Another day, seemingly another movie adapted from a comic property.  Kingsman: The Secret Service is based on a series that is not so well known outside of comic fans, leaving a ton of room for interpretation by director Matthew Vaughn (who is pretty familiar with comic properties having directed Kick Ass and X-Men: First Class).  Today, The Weekly Haul is going to take a look at the source material for the movie.

We haven’t seen the film, so we won’t spoil anything specific to that, but this will give a complete spoiler-filled summary of the comics.  With that in mind, let’s go BEFORE THE FILM!!!

Before The Film: Big Hero Six

In the last installment of Before The Film, we talked about unlikely comic properties adapted for film.  Well, if Guardians of the Galaxy was unlikely, then Big Hero 6, a team with only 9 comic appearances is…uhhh…super-duper really unlikely???

Now making their big screen debut as the 54th animated feature in the Walt Disney Animated Classics series, Big Hero 6 seems destined to be a huge hit.  But where did they come from?  For a movie-spoiler FREE review of their comic history, find out more after the jump!

Before The Film: Guardians of the Galaxy

HeaderAs the Marvel movie universe grows and expands with Earth-based heroes, next month brings their first foray into outer space with Guardians of the Galaxy.  Originally a surprising pick for a film when officially announced at 2012’s San Diego Comic-Con alongside more well-established properties (such as Captain America and Thor), many comic fans were concerned (to quote a message board) —

“They can’t even sell their own comic books, how are they supposed to sell movie tickets?”

“It’s time to jump the shark…. Not sure the mass market can handle too much… erm … ‘space’ I guess…. i dunno… At least will get an Iron Man 3 before this potential disaster!”

“Ew…. not too excited. I mean a raccoon? Really?”

Since the announcement, though,  GotG has built a TON of momentum and both fans and non-fans alike have latched onto this concept as a real exciting one.  In the vein of the prior “Before The Film” entry on Days of Future Past, we’ll be looking at the history of the Guardians of the Galaxy from a comics perspective — who they are, where they came from, and the striking changes that have occurred in the team over the 45 years since their creation.

[NOTE: This article was written prior to movie release, therefore there are NO MOVIE- SPECIFIC SPOILERS HERE.]

The release of the 7th and newest installment in Fox’s X-Men franchise, X-Men: Days of Future Past, marks another major comic storyline adapted for the screen.  Now, I haven’t seen the movie yet, so there are NO MOVIE SPOILERS HERE (as I haven’t seen it yet), but we’ll be exploring the original comic arc, its context in X-Men history, and the lasting legacy DOFP has stamped on the X-Universe. Take me to the Future!
